India's leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki is to launch the Concept R3 in the country some time next year and the firm had released the price and feature list of the vehicle, which it had unveiled at the Delhi Aut Expo early this year. The IC Tech News reports citing Maruti Suzuki spokesperson as saying that the R3 concept car will car a new segment in the Indian car market. What is more, the six-seater would essentially be a family car, catering to large families. The report further says that the car will be launched next year with a price tag between Rs 6 to 8 lakh.

The new Maruti Concept R3 sports an 1196 cc engine with a maximum torque of 101 N at 3000 rpm. The car generates 73 bhp of power at 6000 rpm. Maruti R3 again comes from the genre of K-series engine that powers other Maruti lineup such as new WagonR and Ritz. The car boasts of a high head room and amazing stylish looks with three rows of seats which is seen as a stretched version of SX4. The elegantly designed concept R3 optimises interior space without compromising on the firmness of the exterior, says the report.

Its chrome grille, concealed rear lamps, glass roof and aluminum accents on the side accentuate the looks, the report adds.

Maruti Suzuki also confirmed that the R3 MPV concept car will be designed in India that will help keep the cost down. With R3, the Japanese company is aiming at carrying forward its enormous commitment to R&D. The report adds that the firm would develop R3 at its engineering centre in Rohtak spread at 700 acres with a huge investment of over Rs 3,500 crore and the main competitors to Concept R3 MPV will be Mahindra Xylo, Tata Sumo Grande and Toyota Innova.

Maruti Suzuki SX4 Diesel

After a huge success of petrol version of its mid-size sedan Maruti SX4, the company is now planning to launch a diesel version of the SX4 in the county in the first quarter next year. The SX4 diesel model will come powered by a 1.3L turbo charged engine which will be comparatively more powerful and more fuel efficient than the existing 1.3L diesel engine of Maruti Swift and Ritz, and Dzire.

Though both the petrol and diesel variant share common looks, the main draw for this variant of the Maruti Suzuki SX4 will clearly be its extremely efficient diesel engine. Market trends show that consumers are slowly but steadily shifting towards diesel engine mainly due to the lower cost and improved performance. The Maruti Suzuki Diesel Sx4 is going to give the other new diesel cars a stiff competition both in terms of price range and efficiency.

The assembly of the engine in Maruti SX4 diesel will go on stream from January 3rd, 2011. Maruti Suzuki currently sources diesel engine production technology from Italian car maker Fiat. The launch of a diesel engine will enable the Maruti SX4 to compete more promptly against the likes of Hyundai Verna Transform, Volkswagen Vento, Fiat Linea, Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Optra Magnum. The Maruti SX4 diesel model is expected to be launched in the price bracket of Rs 8 to 10 lakh.

Engine & Specification of the SX4 Diesel

The Maruti SX4 diesel version will come powered by a 1.3L turbo charged engine that has been refined with the help of some additional performance enhancing features. The car would be delivering a peak power of 90 bhp along with a peak torque of up to 200Nm, same as its petrol counter part. The Maruti SX4 diesel is expected to be carrying both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission versions. While the wheel base of the car will be 2500mm, the ground clearance is expected to be in the range of 180mm to 190mm.

Performance of the SX4 Diesel

The 1.3L turbocharged engine of Maruti SX4 diesel has been refined with the help of some additional performance enhancing features. The 1.3L engine of SX4 diesel is not only more powerful but is also more fuel efficient as compared to the 1.3L engine used in diesel version of Maruti Swift, Ritz and Swift Dzire. The car will come compatible with BS-IV emission norms and will be carrying a comparatively low emission level. A superb stability and smooth riding has been ensured with the help of independent suspension (with gas filled McPherson strut) at front along with anti-roll bar and semi independent torsion beam type fork at rear (mated with gas filled shock absorbers). The acceleration and pick-up characteristics of the car are yet to be revealed by the company, however, SX4 diesel is expected that be a bit faster as compared to its petrol counterpart.

Exterior, Interior & Safety of the SX4 Diesel

The design, style and features of Maruti SX4 diesel would be almost similar to the existing petrol version of the car. The same sharp-looking head lights, horizontal oval shape fog lamp cluster, honeycomb radiator grille and black matt shade front grille would be used at the exterior of SX4 diesel. The car is also expected to come in high priced variant with leather upholstery, carrying leather wrapped steering wheel, all leather seats and leather accent front and rear door trims. Overview
Maruti Suzuki has been reborn as a make with a portfolio of global models. Way back in 1994 when Maruti had introduced its first entry level sedan 'Esteem', it set a benchmark that continued to rule till late 2000. With the aging of Esteem, Maruti scrapped the model from 2008 and has now introduced the new Swift DZiRE sedan. Swift DZiRE is the sedan version of the famous Swift hatchback and resembles its sibling in most aspects.

While designing the new sedan, Maruti has made an effort to retain the original overall design theme of the Swift hatchback. But the rear of the car is a complete deviation from the Swift and resembles the recently launched Maruti SX4 Sedan.

The Swift DZiRE comes in six variants - LXi, VXi, and ZXi (Petrol) and LDi, VDi, and ZDi (Diesel). The trims are packed with upscale accessories, quality interior materials and safety features that are a first for the segment. The new car certainly looks to be a good replacement for the Esteem. By incorporating the design of the Swift hatchback, Maruti has saved heavily on design cost and has managed the project on a low budget.

Powertrain & Performance

The DZiRE provides a choice of the same two engines available on the hatchback version of Swift. The petrol engine is a 1298cc 16-valve In-line 4 that delivers 87 bhp@6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 113 Nm@4500 rpm. The diesel variants get a 1248cc turbocharged DDiS engine that generates 75 bhp@4000 rpm and a maximum torque of 190 Nm@2000 rpm.

The Swift DZiRE variants have lower kerb weight in their class with petrol variants ranging from 1010-1035 kg and Diesel variants ranging from 1090-1115 kg. The lower kerb weight advantage translates to good performance of the car. The gearbox is slick and the clutch is smooth. This makes driving the car a pleasure.

Overall, the DZiRE gives the driver good feel and performance that is similar to the Swift hatchback.

Build & Styling

New Maruti Swift DZiRE Car - Interior

The Swift DZiRE retains the cheeky appeal of its hatchback sibling with a more premium look. Though the front fascia looks almost the same as the hatchback, it has got a flashy chrome grille and slightly sharper design headlamps.

From the side, the sedan has a complete redesign compared to the hatch, especially from the second pillar. It has bigger doors and larger window glass areas that make occupants feel roomier.

The DZiRE's back is entirely different from the hatchback. The trunk lid is raised and has a lip that merges with the shoulder line of the car. A thick chrome garnish on top of the rear number plate attempts to offset the heaviness of the oversized trunk lid. The rear also flaunts new clear-lens combination lamps.

The car's interior has a luxurious look and feel with the use of good materials. The steering wheel is the same unit that is offered with the Swift and SX4. The instrument cluster has round dials with chrome surround and features a white backlight.

Compared to the hatchback, the most notable changes in the sedan are in the top-end variants that now come with standard steering mounted controls for the music system and the new music system has been well integrated into the dashboard to add a lot of charm. The DZiRE also has a comfortable seating position for the rear occupants compared to the Swift hatchback. The rear seat backrests are angled at 27 degrees.

The VXi, ZXi, VDi, and ZDi come with quality fittings like integrated audio system, tachometer, and convenience features such as audible headlights-on reminder, centre and front cabin lights, vanity mirror, rear seat center armrest, and front electric power windows. The top-end ZXi and ZDi variants are equipped with more upscale features like front airbags, ABS with EBD brake assist, rear window defogger, adjustable tilt steering, and automatic climate control.

Suzuki Concept Cars are Cuter than Hello Kitty: 2011 Tokyo Motor Show

There’s the Honda N-Box and the Daihatsu Pico, but nothing at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show can compare to the extreme levels of cuteness on display at the Suzuki booth.

In total, Suzuki has presented three new concept cars, ranging from near-production to downright absurd. In the latter category is the Q Concept (above), which looks more like a Discman (remember those?) than a car and offers an emissions-free electric range of six miles.

Next up is the Regina concept, which looks close to production, with a fresh styling perspective and a conventional gasoline engine. Thanks to significant attention paid to weight reduction, it manages an incredible 72.3-mpg.

Finally there’s the Swift EV Hybrid, which gets its confusing name from a range-extender powerplant similar to that found in the Chevy Volt. Offering between 12 and 18 miles of electric travel, the gasoline engine then kicks in to recharge the batteries to deliver added range.
