Bajaj Auto launches low cost car RE 60, promises 40 km per litre

Penulis : Unknown on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 | 9:28 AM

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Bajaj Auto unveiled India's latest ultra-low-cost car on Tuesday, a 200cc four-seater that looks set to compete with the Tata Nano for the title of the world's cheapest auto.

The group gave no price for the low-emission vehicle which will have a top speed of 70 kilometres an hour
(43 miles an hour), but the build quality indicated it was pitched firmly at the bottom of the market.

"At Bajaj Auto, we believe the people of the planet deserve much better, much faster," Bajaj said of the car, which will be launched some time this year.

The petrol engine will do 35 kilometres per litre (83 miles per US gallon) in normal driving conditions and emits just 60 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, the company said. It weighs just 400 kilograms (880 pounds).

Bajaj said that emissions were "typically half of what the small cars currently emit in our market."

India has become a centre of low-cost innovation exemplified by the Tata Nano, which was launched to great fanfare in 2009 as a means for poor families to get their hands on their first car.

A no-frills model costs as little as Rs 140,880 ($2,770).

The IC Tech News reports citing Maruti Suzuki spokesperson as saying that the R3 concept car will car a new segment in the Indian car market. What is more, the six-seater would essentially be a family car, catering to large families. The report further says that the car will be launched next year with a price tag between Rs 6 to 8 lakh.

The new Maruti Concept R3 sports an 1196 cc engine with a maximum torque of 101 N at 3000 rpm. The car generates 73 bhp of power at 6000 rpm. The car boasts of a high head room and amazing stylish looks with three rows of seats which is seen as a stretched version of SX4. The elegantly designed concept R3 optimises interior space without compromising on the firmness of the exterior, says the report.

The interior of Maruti Suzuki Concept R3 had taken designing cues from flowing water and on a closer introspection, one can see various elements of the design merging into one another like fluid. Even the exterior has smooth flowing lines starting from vehicle’s front and going to its rear just like water. Its chrome grille, concealed rear lamps, glass roof and aluminum accents on the side accentuate the looks, the report adds.

Maruti Suzuki also confirmed that the R3 MPV concept car will be designed in India that will help keep the cost down. With R3, the Japanese company is aiming at carrying forward its enormous commitment to R&D. The report adds that the firm would develop R3 at its engineering centre in Rohtak spread at 700 acres with a huge investment of over Rs 3,500 crore and the main competitors to Concept R3 MPV will be Mahindra Xylo, Tata Sumo Grande and Toyota Innova.
